Employment Requirements and Salary Level
When applying for TTPS renewal, the most important thing is to prove that you have a genuine employment relationship in Hong Kong. The Immigration Department will review your employment contract, the nature of your position, and your salary level, to ensure that your work meets the general professional standard.
Specifically, your salary must reach the market level. Generally referring to data from the Census and Statistics Department, job websites and similar sources, a monthly salary not lower than the median for the same position in Hong Kong is considered reasonable. The Immigration Department does not set a uniform hard minimum figure, but makes a flexible assessment based on the individual industry and position. For example, the salary requirement for an information technology manager would differ from that of an administrative assistant.
In addition, your job must normally be one held by a degree holder, and your salary and benefits must also reach the market level, which means you cannot accept a wage far below market rate just to secure a renewal. If you become unemployed for a short period before your renewal, the Immigration Department may ask for an explanation and may only grant a shorter extension, giving you time to look for a new job.
If you intend to change jobs, this is generally permissible in principle, but you must ensure that the new job also meets the above requirements, and after changing jobs you should notify the Immigration Department as soon as possible and submit the relevant contract and supporting documents, so as to avoid the risk of a visa interruption.
Residence Proof Requirements
Apart from work, you also need to prove your connection to Hong Kong through ordinary residence. The Immigration Department will consider a number of factors, including whether you have a fixed abode (whether rented or owned), whether your family members reside in Hong Kong, whether your principal place of work is in Hong Kong, and whether you treat Hong Kong as the centre of your life.

Useful residence proof documents include:
- A valid tenancy agreement or property sale and purchase agreement
- Utility bills such as water, electricity and gas
- Bank statements or credit card bills showing a Hong Kong address
- School enrolment records for children in Hong Kong
Please note that frequent or prolonged departures from Hong Kong may affect your renewal application, unless you can provide a reasonable explanation, such as short-term departure from Hong Kong for work purposes. It is advisable to keep your immigration records and submit them together with your application.
Practical Strategies to Avoid Visa Lapses
Prepare in Advance — Avoid Leaving It to the Last Minute
A TTPS renewal application can be submitted within four weeks before the visa expiry date. Never wait until the visa has expired to apply, because after expiry you will not be able to remain in Hong Kong and will lose your right to work legally. It is recommended to prepare the required documents early, including the latest employment contract, the past three months’ payslips and bank salary payment records, Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF) contribution records, proof of residence, and an up-to-date curriculum vitae.
Maintain Communication with Your Employer
Your employer may need to complete part of the application form (such as ID 990B), or provide documents such as a company profile and a copy of the business registration certificate. Therefore, communicating with your employer early to ensure they are willing to cooperate is crucial.
Pay Attention to Dependant Visas
If your dependants holding dependant visas (spouse and unmarried children under 18) have their visa periods tied to yours, the success of your renewal directly affects them. You must ensure that their visa extension applications are also submitted at the same time, otherwise they too will lose their right to remain, work or study in Hong Kong.
How to Respond to Processing Delays or Requests for Additional Documents
The Immigration Department generally takes two to three weeks to process a renewal application, but it may take longer during peak periods or for complex cases. If you are asked to submit additional documents, you should respond as soon as possible to avoid delays. If you have not received a decision by the time your visa expires, the validity of your current visa will be automatically extended until a result is reached, so there is no need for excessive worry.
Maintaining good document records, communicating proactively with the Immigration Department, and ensuring that all requirements are met is the best strategy to avoid a visa lapse. If you have any questions, you may consult a professional immigration adviser or solicitor.
